Depression life in the 1930's was much worse than present-day depression. People were literally starving in America's major cities and medical assistance was difficult to procure. There was a ban on alcoholic beverages. People read a lot and families played board and yard games together more than they do now.

People could not spend much money, they had to live modest, and their were not many jobs. Some people had to stand in long lines to get soup.
