Originally, England planned to create an empire in America to find gold or a Northwest Passage. Later on they began sending undesirables and prisoners to the colonies.
Infact England itself had little desire to establish colonies in the new world because of the lack of trade routes to India and China. The americas where mainly left to the religious fanatics and idealouges.
