During the Depression a great many people ate vegetarian meals using their fresh gardens to make a lot of stews and soups. Potatoes were fairly inexpensive and they are filling so that was a huge stable to the diet. Fresh eggs and breads were also a huge part as they are filling.

At that time, people ate whatever they could get their hands on. Meat was very scarce, and they ate a lot of simple things made from flour and water, maybe a little milk or some vegetables if there were on the farm and had access; things like hoe cakes were common.
