The United States operates on a capitalism-based economy built heavily on trade balances related to the import and export of a wide range of goods and services. While capitalism by definition favors a continuum of short- and long-term gains, the last few decades of focus on short-term gains have created a recession in the US economy.

The United States operates under a "free market" economy. This system is based on "Supply and Demand". The economy is allowed to grow and contract based on "demand conditions".
