Get your rabbit from a store that has an extensive small animal section. You'll need a cage, food, bedding, etc. designed for rabbits. Rabbits are relatively fragile (hence the saying "breeds like rabbits") so you need to take time for proper care and feeding.

One of the smaller breeds like a Dutch Belted would be best as a pet simply because of the size factor making it easier to handle.

First, I'd like to point out that rabbits scare easily and might not be the best pet for kids. That being said, choose a young rabbit from a breeder, so that you can raise it to be comfortable around people. Feed it primarily of hay and vegetables, very few pellets.

Look at the overall body condition. Well groomed coat. Pink ears. Clean eyes and nose. Buy from a breeder. Rabbits love to chew and dig. They like to feel safe and need adequate room to exercise. Can like 8 years or more.
