First set a limit for yourself ahead of time of how much you are willing to spend total at the auction. It is easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and bid much more than an item is worth/you can comfortably afford. Also, do research on average prices and values for items ahead of time.

When attending an auction, get there early, check out all the merchandise, and compare available items. See if you can test any of the items, or if they come with any guarantee. Know the value of the items you're interested in; don't get caught up in the bidding frenzy or you can easily pay more than you should.
