Petunias are annuals. They are planted every spring, flower through the summer and begin to die off as the weather gets colder. In some areas, they might seed in a few places, but to get a brilliant petunia bed, you must replant each year.

Cut petunias back in the summer towards the middle of their season, when the branches grow longer and you can see where the older flowers were.

The best time of year to cut petunias depends on the weather you're in. If your petunia blooms year round, you can dead head them anytime or as needed.

I think you can cut them in the end of the fall season so that they can grow again. I'm not sure though.

The best time to cut back most any plants which also includes Petunias. Petunias are popular among garners because the plants is an annual and the plant produces large bright blooms. Just make sure you give the plant room to grow so it can get bigger and fuller.

You cut back petunias when they have long shoots with few blossoms. That keeps them looking full and healthy. Cut off about 4-5 inches. I start cutting a few shoots at the time so that there will always be blooms. Still, petunias are an annual plant.
