An mp3 file (3, not 4) is an audio file (music, etc) an mp4 on the other hand is an mp3 file (audio) with video (a movie may be in mp4 format for example) all ipods use mp4 files for videos, most personal audio devices with a good sized screen would be compatible with mp4 files

Macintosh and all products of it use mp4. It has now spread to windows as well. Ipods, Itunes and many other media players use mp4 format, which is very similar to the mp3 format. Some ipods will not accept mp3 format and will only take songs and movies in an mp4 format.
