A paraesophageal hiatal hernia, is usually treated by attaching the herniated stomach to the abdomen and affix it with sutures. The results of surgical management are generally excellent.

If a hiatal hernia is determined to be serious enough to require surgery, the usual approach is to use a meshlike material to wrap around the esophagus to decrease the size of the bulge or hernia. Usually, the treatment is dietary and medicinal, however.
