Since a lot of food and stains get on your walls it's best if you wash your wall before you paint. Allow time to dry. You can use bleach water.

The Kitchen walls have to to be thoroughly sanded to provide adequate roughness to take on the paint System. In case the levelling of the wall is not perfect you may either use gypsum board or use wall fillers for levelling. This should be followed by using suitable coats of paint.

Make sure the walls are clean of dirt and grease first. Also make sure that you use a kitchen and bath type paint on the walls and or cupboards so that grease and kitchen mess doesn't destroy the paint job.

Depending on what you have on your walls a good quality primer would be a solid idea, food stains and previous colors can bleed through without primer.
