Focus on two things: expressing your affection for the birthday boy/girl, and offering positive wishes for success and happiness in the future.

If you have not seen the person in a while, you can provide personal updates. You can look up witty or meaningful quotes (via google). If you have an artistic flair, you can even try writing them a poem about how much they mean to you-you can make it cute and meaningful.

Offer congratulations, whether exclamatory or with a more serious tone. Follow that with good wishes for a happy birthday and the rest of the year.

It can be short and sweet, such as referencing a funny joke they made or commenting on something unique to them, like good luck on something they are working on.

A birthday marks another year passing in someone's life, and it can also mark another year in your friendship. You can mention special memories that you and the recipient have formed in the last year, and reiterate a few of their qualities that make them a great friend. Then, wish them a great year to come!

You could write about some of your favorite memories and times you've shared with the person who is having the birthday. You could also write quotes from your discussions with them that are funny or meaningful, or make references to inside jokes between you both.
