The first thing you need to know is if there is a market for pygmy goats. Otherwise this will become an ongoing expense. The second thing would be your current work schedule. Do you have the time and energy for a second nearly full time job? Good Luck.

The female pygmy goat should be seven to nine months old and healthy. Breeding should take place in the period between autumn to early spring according to the signs of fertility observed in the female pygmy goat. Artificial insemination should be used according to the specified instructions given by creditable breeders.

There really isn't any money in it, especially if you're a novice breeder. There are so many animals being over bred in this bad economy. Many people take animals on and then end up neglecting them because they have no means or money to take care of them.

Pygmy goat breeding can be interesting as well as dangerous. When a goat is in heat they tend to get wild and don't know what they are doing and may hurt anything or anyone in their way. If you want to breed them please do as much research on the matter as possible.

I have never heard of such a case as this in the 30+ years of Pygmy goat breeding I have had. Pygmies are gentle pets.  add a comment

Well, my family breeds pygmy goats and we don't make any money off of them. Yes, we do sell the kids, but the money goes back to take care of the other goats. We keep them because they are great pets and the kids are in 4H ans show them.

When considering breeding these goats, remember that you are trying to improve the overall next generation of goats. The goats should not be breed unless the parent candidates have great personalities and act similar to the rest of your pygmies. Study the perspective parents to be as sure as possible that you are breeding healthy sturdy goats.

The National Pygmy Goat Association would be your best source for information. You can meet breeders, view goats for sale, and get helpful advice on raising and breeding your herd.

The biggest thing you need to know is the pedigrees of the goats. After that it is a process of trial and error when matching up pedigrees to achieve the best offspring. Starting out you need to be able to control inbreeding.

Pygmy goats are small breed goats, also known as dwarfs. Ensure that the doe is at least seven to nine months and a healthy size before being bred for the first time. While pygmy goats may be bred almost year round, the traditional breeding season is autumn through early spring
