The best thing to say would be "You are invited to (child's name)first birthday party. We are having a potluck. Please bring your favorite dish or beverage to share with all. " It might also be a good idea to give examples of what you want them to bring such as meatball, chips, veggies and dip, etc.

It is considered EXTREMELY tacky to throw a potluck birthday party. You are in effect asking your guests to spend money on both a gift and for food. Either hold a potluck and specify NO GIFTS PLEASE on the invitation or prepare the refreshments yourself.

Just make it catchy and fun on the invitation. Hopefully since its a first birthday you are only inviting people you are pretty close to, so don't be afraid to ask, it's your party say that it's potluck. Everyone will have a great time!

Ask each family to bring a specific thing such as rolls or soda, paper plates, chicken wings, or chips enough for the group. You supply cake and ice cream.

You are cordially invited to a first birthday party! It will be potlock, so if you can, bring fun dishes for us to try! Trying something new is always fun so there should be a lot of variety for you to choose from! I hope to see you there with your favorite dish!

Put a cute picture of food on the card and write "Come share our joy with a potluck celebration!". Also include the other important information.
