Red eared sliders should be fed both animal and plant materials in their diet. But if you can not get live animals like earthworms or crickets, then feed them leafy green vegetables. Commercially prepared turtle pellets can be a small part of their diet also.

Feed your red ear sliders a staple diet of Floating Aquatic Turtle Pellets. Feed these pellets to your turtles at least once a day. You can find recipes online for homemade turtle food. Every other day, supplement your turtles diet with dark green leafy vegetables and finely chopped, lightly blanched vegetables. Give your turtle treats at least once a week.

Red eared slider turtles eat both meat and vegetation. Feed them a combination of live prey such as earthworms, crickets, shrimp, or mealworms, along with leafy greens like collard, mustard, and dandelion.

Sliders like small animals, dead meat, insects and raw, leafy vegetables. Choose the type of food according to the size of your turtle. Always drop the food into the water.

Pet stores sell nutrionally complete pellets, but turtles like variety. Mine likes freeze-dried shrimp and won't touch a pellet. Bite-sized pieces of greens (mustard, kale, bok choy and collard -- avoid lettuce). Live prey options include krill, earthworms, silkworms, crickets, and aquatic snails.
