You should prepare yourself before he dies. Finances are in order. You know what bills are paid and how much. Where is all the insurance info. Funeral arrangements. Cemetery plot.

Have a living will in place prior to a loved ones death to be aware of what their wishes are at time of death.

You should remember all the wonderful times you had with them, and never let them out of your heart or memories. Though, remember to go on with your life.
