One simple problem that causes the power steering to not function correctly is that the air filter is clogged with too much dust and debris. another problem might be that the wiring and connections could either be tampered or severed. Power steering also can disengage due high mileage on a vehicle.

Check to make sure that the fluids are all in check. The main problem with power steering is usually a leak in the fluid so that the steering cannot be lubricated properly.

if you are having trouble with your power steering i would try filling the power steering box and if that doesn't work i would bleed the system because there might be some air in your lines
