You should make every effort to try to find your cockatiel as soon as possible. Dogs and cats that run away from home do have some survival abilities with claws, etc, however pet birds don't. Being locked in a cage all day they won't have the wing strength to fly for help and they will die quickly.

Put his/her cage outside and leave the door open. Watch her if possible, and alert any neighbors that s/he is loose. Usually when a bird gets hungry or scared, s/he will return to their cage. If not, a tame bird will usually find another human. If your bird is missing, put up "Lost" signs and check the newspaper.

Don't open the door! It's irresponsible to have an unclipped bird by an open door. There isn't much you can do now, other than hope someone finds him and returns him to you. Put up flyers and post local ads. Hopefully, he's not been eaten.

Well you usually have to run out the door and call it to try to locate it. If you manage to find it then you can catch it. If you havent found it you may want to go take a look at the local bird shelter if someone found it.

To get your cockatiel back, call so when he responds you can hear where he flew to. Once found, do not lose sight of him. Try to coax him down. If he has a mate/friend, take that bird outside with you in an enclosure and have the mate/friend call to him to coax him down.

Put it's cage outside during the day with the door open. If the bird can see it he will return to his cage when he gets hungry. If that doesn't work, you may want to start thinking about posting a 'lost' ad in the local paper and offer a reward. Post flyers and alert your neighbors.
