What makes Malibu Rum taste the way it does?

It says "coconut", but that's not how it tastes.

Rum is made from sugar cane, so an unflavored rum would have a sweet taste, as well as the obvious taste of alcohol. Malibu Rum, in particular, is flavored with coconut, so some coconut taste (or aftertaste) is identifiable in addition to the base rum flavor. It therefore mixes well with pineapple juice.

Rum is made by fermenting sugar cane by-products such as molasses and sugarcane juice. The distillate is typically aged in oak or other barrells. Malibu rum is flavored with natural coconut extract from the Caribbean island of Barbados. It gives hints of almond and mocha flavor. Malibu is a light rum usually used for mixed drinks.
