What makes Haflinger horses so smart?

What is it that distinguishes this breed from others, in terms of intelligence?

A Haflinger which is technically a pony due to it's short stature isn't any more smart than any other breed of horse. I've found that intelligence in horses varies from horse to horse. It's never the breed that's smart, but the individual horse that is.

Haflingers are smart for the same reason that they're rather willful. The two qualities tend to be inversely related. The most cooperative breeds tend to be the less intelligent breeds, while the more intelligent breeds are often more willing to "test" a rider or trainer.
