A common law marriage depends on the state. The states that do recognize common law marriage often see the couple as living together for a certain period of time and share responsiblities that a normal married couple would share.

The rules for common law marriages vary from state to state, and some states do not recognize them at all. For those states that do recognize them, generally speaking, a couple have to have been living as though married for a certain number of years. The exact number of years that is required also varies.
