All grants are free. Federal student aid is based on eligibility, which is based on income, dependents, and other factors. Academic progress is required to qualify each year.

Usually, you must be enrolled as a full-time student (and if you withdraw, you sometimes have to pay it back). Some grants require you to keep a certain grade point average, both overall and in your core classes. Program-specific grants must be used towards a particular major at an accredited university as well.

In general, educational grants require you maintain a minimum enrollment (could be full time or half time, according to which grant you receive) and maintain adequate academic progress -- that is, you must complete and pass the classes for which you enroll and for which the grants pay. Specific grants may have other, very specific requirements.

Some restrictions for free education grants are what your parents make each year, what race and nationality you may be, and it depends on your overall grades in previous schools. It just depends on what type of educational grant you are trying to get. There are many sources on the internet to help you find more info.

They typically can only be used at an accredited school. They often can only be used to cover tuition, fees, and books, but some grants allow you to use them for living expenses.

For some grants you must be a full-time student. Pell grants are for low to middle income students. The SMART grant is restricted to third and fourth year students in a science or mathematical field.
