Tub installation is actually more of an exercise in framing than plumbing. Tubs are held in place along the wall with a backing board attached to the framing of the wall. Drop in tubs sit around a frame on a bed of concrete. The most difficult part is lining the drains. Home centers have books covering general plumbing.

Suppply lines to a tub are generally copper. If the facet lines up with the new tub no changes will be needed. The old faucet will need to be removed with crescent wrench and a pipe wrench. The drain will be either cast iron or pvc. As long as no solder is needed you should be able to complete yourself.
