I have kept cichlids in the past and your filtration will depend on the size of the tank, number of fish, and what region the fish come from. I kept a number of convict cichlids in a 50 gallon tank with 2 Rena smart filters and never lost a fish with regular filter cleanings.

A mechanical aquarium filter that hangs on the back of the tank. These have a tube that sucks up water, filters it and then pours water back into the tank.

An external system is almost always going to be the best for any fish tank, but they are expensive. If you don't want to go that route then you can get an internal one which should work just fine.
