I always had trouble with my aloe plants and even killed a few. Here's what I was doing wrong: soil needs to be fertile and soak soil when dry.

Aloe Vera is pretty forgiving- but remember, this is a desert plant. I would start it in a good potting soil with vermiculite. Aloe needs drainage. It abhors being wet and soggy. A good mix of a sandy soil with an inch of pebbles at the bottom of the pot should do you just fine.

An aloe vera plant will thrive in a fetile soil containing some limestone. Drainage is very importnt, so the soil should not contain large quantities of organic matter.

You should use soil that is moderately fertile and drains fast. During the summer, the soil should initially be soaked with water and only watering again when the soil dries.
