Winging scapula occurs when there is damage to the long thoracic nerve, the nerve responsible for the function of the serratus anterior muscle. This muscle lays between the scapula and the ribcage and is responsible for stabilization of the scapula during some movements. When this muscle doesn't function properly, the scapula may protrude slightly from the back.

A winging scapula is when the shoulder blade moves posterior and lateral from the back or "wings". It is not a severe condition and may be reduced as your child develops muscularly. Usually it is caused by a weak serratus anterior muscle which is on the side of the rib cage. If your doctor was not concerned I wouldn't be.

It is typically happens when the long thoracic nerve has been damaged and thus the muscles do not function properly. A quick screen is to do a pushup on a wall and the doctor will look to see if the effected scapula sticks out more compared to the other side.

Generally, the scapula (your shoulder blade) lies flat or parallel to the back. A winged scapula points out and back, or away, from the spine.
