In one of the corners of the map there should be a little icon, usually shaped like a four pointed star that's labeled with the directions. Another way to remember is North is up, South is down, East is right and West is left.
There will be a mini compass, probably on the corner of the map, that tells you North, South, East & West. Also, if you are looking at the map, the top will be north, south at the bottom, east to the right and west to the left.
