If it's a 4x4 the most typical noise is one of the air locking hubs may not be unlocking. This could be caused by a vacuum leak or bad solinoid.

Your tie rods may need to be replaced, that is a very common thing with clunking noises at the time of braking. I do Recommend a alignment check, They will tell you if they need to be replaced. though the car will need to be aligned afterwards. Otherwise you can really mess you your tires if you wait too long

CV boots. These dust boots wear over time and are easily fixed. You or your mechanic check the black dust boots on the axle shafts leading form the transfer case to the hub of the wheel. If the boots are cracked or torn you need new ones (typically not too expensive).

You need to examine the Ball joints, tie rods and ends, or if it is 4WD, the transfer case and CV Joints/knuckles.

It sounds like you are having a tie rod end issue. It could also be a bad bushing or even the rack and pinion. It can even be the bearings going on you. Take the wheels off and find out what is loose.

Most noises that would be described as "clunking" i would say are atypical of either a weak suspension (Most Likely) or perhaps even a loose part on your frame or innards of your car. Most likely the suspension is just shot, not a serious problem, but it will make annoying noises.
