There is no specific treatment for the cracked sternum, but many over the counter remedies as well as professional treatments are available for the symptoms such as restricted movement and exteme pain, especially during heavy breathing. Alternating hot and cold compresses work to reduce swelling and dull nerves in the area. Common pain medications make movement bearable.

It is important to get up and moving rather than stay in bed. One tends to breathe shallow b/c of pain. Once an hr you need to practice DEEP BREATHING when awake for about the 1st week to prevent pneumonia from settling in the lungs.  add a comment

Dr's orders are to rest for 6 to 8 wks and take prescribed muscle relaxants and pain meds as needed. Since the pain will cause shallow breathing, practice DEEP BREATHING WHEN AWAKE once an hr for at least the first week to prevent the onset of pneumonia.

I have a cracked sternum (breastbone)from an auto accident. A thorough eval was done to rule out broken ribs and internal organ damage. Unlike a broken leg or arm, a CRACKED sternum cannot be put in a cast. Only time will heal the crack.

A lot of pain relieving medicine. Possible accupressure, accupuncture, or even reiki. For the most part, nothing can be done. Just resting and waiting for the bruising to subside. Over time, the pain will lessen.

If the sternum has a small crack that does not go through completely just some rest will do. If not it needs to be wired together by a surgery.

A through evaluation to rule out underlying organ injury is a priority. Cardiac & lung injury should be looked for. If its an undisplaced crack-rest,chest strapping and analgesics should suffice but if there is gross displacement of the fractured segments, then a surgical exploration and suturing of the sternal ends with steel wires may be required.
