In 1900, a Des Moines farmer's wife was accused of murdering her husband. Susan Glaspell reported the story. She based Trifles on that story, in which the sheriff's wife and other wives make their own decision about what happened and must decide what to do with damaging evidence they find.

Written in 1916, Trifles is centered around the murder of a small-town farmer, John Wright. His emotionally depressed wife Minnie is suspect. Male officials investigate the clues, but it is the investigator's wives that notice the trifiling clues to the oppressive and demeaning manner in which Minnie Wright existed, revealing the emotional state that could have motivated the crime.
