Turn off all electric appliances and gas ovens, fires and boilers. Call the gas board and tell them you suspect a leak, this service is free they will check the property and make it safe.

Honestly, the safest way to check for this is to hire a professional. If you do not know what you are doing, this could be dangerous.

Whatever you do, do not use a flame. You can have the gas pipes pressure tested by a plumber or use a machine to detect gas.

Apply soapy water where you smell leaks and watch for bubbles. If you see bubbles, don't attempt to fix the leak yourself. The best and safest way is to call your gas company to come to your home. They are professionals.

The safest way would be to have an expert come in and check the pipes. However you can test the connection yourself buy applying soapy water and looking for bubbles.

The safest way would be to call in a professional or someone from the city you live in that has experience in this area. Not that you couldn't do it yourself. But gas leaks are dangerous and should only be checked for by professionals to make sure no one is injured.

My tip is to use you nose! Sniff around for any gaseous or foul smell near the gas pipes around the house. Check also for rusted gas pipes.
