What is the role of a rear axle in a car? Can I fix it myself?

My friend said that's the problem in my car: the rear axle.

The rear axle in a rear wheel drive vehicle is responsible for your car physically moving, it is the last link in the driveline (other than the tires) that transfers power from the motor to the road. It can be fixed, but you need intimate mechanical knowledge to do a proper job. Best solution: buy a used one from junkyard.

In a rear-wheel drive car the rear axle takes the rotation force from the drive-shaft and directs it to both rear wheels. If the car is front-wheel drive it is typically just a beam to hold the suspension. Unless you are very experienced, I wouldn't suggest you fix it yourself.
