Side effects of bipolar medication can vary depending upon the exact medication being taken. With that said, you should absolutely talk with a physician before commencing breast feeding while on any medication, regardless of what it treats.

You should avoid taking any bipolar medication while breastfeeding. They are risk for the baby. It could disrupt their sleep, cause diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive crying. There are a few drugs you can use like Zoloft. If you are not on that, talk to the doc about alternative drugs.

Talk to the prescribing physician and talk to your pediatrician. Many medications have no information about possible effects on pregnancy and nursing. On the other hand, if you took the meds while pregnant and all is well, there is probably no harm in continuing the current dosage.

Sorry but you cannot. The medication will be absorbed into your breast milk and will affect your child. It's not good for the baby.

Currently the only bipolar medication that can be taken while breast feeding is Depakote. Other medications could potentially harm your baby for they cross into your breast milk.

Any medications that you take can be passed on to the baby via breastmilk. The best thing you can do is consult with your doctor or at least your pharmacist.
