What is the purpose of a fraternity?

I don't get the point. It's like buying friends.

Men who join a fraternity often do so to make friends and share in the bonds of Greek life. Of course, fraternities are also associated with partying and attracting girls. Whether it is the drinking and partying, girls, status, or anything else when one joins a fraternity they have a unique connection on campus that non-fraternity members miss out on.

The purpose of a fraternity is to have buddies to drink and party with. I really do not think they become real "buddies," though.
