What is the proper way to ask for a right lead canter on an ex racehorse?

Lots of ground work to the right- trotting, long strong forward walk, and canter departures while on lunge line/ in round pen. Train both sides of the body- what you teach to one side is not transferred over to the other side automatically. Slow and steady ground work translates over to under saddle work. Make sure your balanced as well.

Since racehorses basically only go left during their careers you are going to have to completely retrain this horse. You need to be patient with this horse until it learns to trust you. When you ask for the right lead canter you should squeeze your left leg into your horse and try to shit the right hip to the side.

Ride the horse at a trot on the right rail. Bend the horse's head to the left (inside) and kick lightly with your right (outside) leg behind the girth.
