The place card should be placed at the top of the plate and the name should be visible from both sides.

Place cards for a formal dinner should be handwritten on high-quality card stock. They can be folded--"tented"--and put on the table, centered, at the top of the individual's place, or not folded, and placed in the center of the plate. Avoid using and of the commerially available cute place card holders for a formal affair.
