Typically, a friend or group of friends will throw you an engagement party. However, since you are throwing one for yourselves, be sure to schedule it at a time that is convenient for your friends. On the invitation, make sure to indicate what type of food will be served (light/heavy hors' douvers).

Engagement parties are a unique blend of formalities and informalities; pending on how laid back the couple is towards how festivities are held. It should be encouraged that both future husband and wife are to be bonded for life, so present this information accordingly.

If you are planning an engagement party, announce it to your friends and family via classy invitations. Do not expect gifts (those are for the wedding), although some may bring some presents. Make sure to have snacks and beverages for your guests.

Invite both sets of parents and siblings of the couple, as well as those you want to have in the wedding party. Have finger foods available.

You invite all of your family and friends with a mailed invitation. Usually just appetizer type foods and drinks are served and usually there is a cake.

The people invited to the engagement party must be invited to the wedding. Gifts are not necessary at the party but if you get some, open them in private. The bride's father makes the first toast. Parents of the bride host the party

If you are a traditional person, you may want to just keep it to family and make sure you have enough food and drinks for everyone. There really is no "right" or "wrong" way to celebrate your future lives together. You must do what you think you'll be most comfortable with, and have fun!
