You need to find a substance that is slightly sticky when dry. There are a wide number of options here. I have even heard of someone using egg yolks one time. Anyways, take your rag and dip it in the sticky liquid. Ring it out and hang it up to dry a bit.

Dip well-washed cotton rags in warm water, then in turpentine. Wring out the rag and lay it flat. Lightly sprinkle clear varnish over the surface and wring again, coating evenly.

The best thing to do is to soak a cheese cloth in water and then you can use it on all of your wood projects.
