The very bottom center of the socket is the positive 12 volt lead, the outside portion of the socket is actually the negative, or ground. This is why the accessory plug has a spring loaded center conductor and a wire-looking hook on each side.

A fairly loaded question for sure. Most repairs/replacements on this level are not safe for novices to perform, consult your car manual or speak with a licensed mechanic before hand.

Power ports are center positive, and shell negetive. There are two common sizes; 21mm, and 22.2mm, you should be able to tell what you have by reading owners manaul.

FYI - there are also TWO common sizes; 21mm and 22. 2mm. That 1. 2mm may or may not make a difference, depending on the way the springs on the outside.
