Worship has two Old English parts: weorð, which is the word that means worthy, and -scipe which is the suffix which means state or condition. Therefore worship means having the state of being worthy. From that, it was an easy jump to apply that to the act of praising God.

Worship originated in Heaven. In Genesis, you can read about the angels worshiping God in Heaven. One angel in charge of worship wanted the worship for himself, and was cast out of heaven. He became Satan.
