What is the origin of the word elder?

The word comes from the Middle English words eldre, elrene, ellerne and the Old English ellærn. Records of the use of the word elder date to the year 900.

Elder is the only surviving Umlaut comparison in English. It comes from the Old English word eald, ald "old," which was increased by the ending -er, making a comparative adjective.
