The state motto is "Excelsior", which means "ever upwards". You can find the motto on the New York state flag. The region New York is in was originally a province called New Netherland, but the English renamed it to New York to honor the Duke of York.

New York's official state motto is Excelsior (ever upward). I would like to share some other New York State items. The state flower is the rose, the state tree is Sugar Maple and the state bird is the bluebird. The nickname for New York is the Empire State.
