Algae is eaten as a food in many locations, especially Asia. It contains lots of vitamins and healthy fatty acids. A possible negative would be pollution that accumulates in algae.

Depending on the type of algae, you can get different notritional value. Spirulina is loaded with protein and has 8 essential amino acids along with omega 3. Chlorella contains simular nutritional value. Red marine algar is loaded with vitamins, minerals, proteins and enzymes.

I haven't ever heard of any nutritional drawback to eating algae. Like anything, I suppose it's possible to eat too much. It packs a big nutrient bang in relation to its caloric count, so I don't see any reason to worry.
