Dearth is the word describing scarcity of available resources such as food as a shortage or insufficiency in such resources. The word originates from the middle English word "derthe" used approximately from 1200 to 1250 A.D. which often is mistakenly associated with the word "death" but was a common description of elements of a famine.

The word "dearth" means in short supply. As in "There is a dearth of workers for this project". It originated in the 13th century and was used to describe a lack of food.
