Hanukah represents a restoration of faith and freedom to practice Judaism. The Second Temple was desecrated and Judaism outlawed under Syrian rule. When the Maccabes drove the Syrians back, the temple was reconsecrated but there was only enough oil for the lamps to last for one night, yet the lamps burned for eight nights until new oil could be obtained.
