The origin of the tie goes back to the Thirty Years' War when Croatian mercenaries fighting for the French wore small neckerchiefs. This military wear started a trend among the French who called dubbed it a "cravat." This spread throughout Europe. During the Industrial Revolution that an easier version of the fashion trend was created, producing the modern day tie.

The ancestor of the tie is a neck scarf. Later, it was made fashionable. In 1926, Jesse Langsdorf has the idea of cutting the tie diagonally in the fabric.
