The history of the days of the week can be connected to the Roman times when the days were given the names of Roman gods.

The astrological heptagram correlated the days of the week with the heavenly bodies. Saturday comes from the planet Saturn, Sunday from the Sun, and Monday from the Moon. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, associated with Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus respectively, were named after the equivalent Norse gods.

The names of the days, as they are used today, come largely from the Germanic tribes, except Saturday which is Roman (Saturn). Wednesday, for instance, is named for Wodan, better known as Odin. Friday is named for Freya.
