Rap finds its own origins steeped in the African American tribesman culture. It was folk music brought over in the mid 1970s.

The roots of rap music can be traced to African and Caribbean music in the 1970s. The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" is generally considered the first mainstream rap song.

As far as I'm concerned, rapping was already popular before hip-hop came into existance. The origins of rap music come from dub reggae and songs like "Guns of Brixton" by The Clash, the first hip-hop song I'm aware of, though, is "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang.

There are many stories on the origin of rap, and depending on where you begin the narrative changes. Some people start in West Africa where stories were told in rhythm.

It started in the 50s when urban youth used rhymes to belittle other youth on the playground. Eventually those rhymes were said over music at block parties.

I think the first song to be considered rap was raper's delight, who was a combination of disco music with many rap singers. that was around the 70's.
