Mount Rushmore was conceived in order to encourage tourism in South Dakota. In 1925 sculptor Gutzon Borglum decided to carve George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. Theodore Roosevelt was suggested by President Coolidge. Mount Rushmore, along with the Hall of Records, was sculpted from 1927 to 1941 by hundreds of workers, when Borglum died.
