Some of the driest white wines are chardonnay, chablis, sauvignon blanc and champagne (a dry sparkling wine); the driest red wines are cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot and the chiantis.

Any grape variety can make a dry wine. One cannot say one variety e.g. Cab is drier. Do not confuse dryness and astringency. Dry means almost no sugar remains after fermentation and astringent means the tannins cause a "dry" feeling in the mouth. Yellow Tail is not dry.

Yellow Tail Shiraz is a very dry wine. My mom LOVES it. She also loves Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon, which is also very dry.

Zinfandel, Cabernot Sauvignon, Bordeaux, Pinot Noir. Dry Wine means that the sugar within the grapes has been completely consumed during fermantation. Thus the wine has a very high alcohol content.

It is hard to say what is the driest wines as there are many brands available in the market, i would suggest you go in for a dry red wine called Cabernet, this is a dry red wine and will make an excellent gift for your friend on her birthday.

The driest wine in my opinion is a red Cabernet sauvignon. The large amount of tannins in this cabernet make it age well and also make your mouth feel very dry.
