What is the difference in operating systems?

I want to pick a good one for my computer.

XP: tested to be stable in most of the software applications nowadays. It's using NTFS file system. Vista and Windows 7 used image. OS corruption will lead to OS re installation.

First decide on Windows vs Linux. Windows is easier to use and supports more things, but Linux has more custom options and is much more secure. If you go with windows, skip vista and just get Windows 7.

Operating systems can vary in size and functionality greatly. Windows 7, for instance, allows for intricate picture editing, sound editing, high def movie viewing, etc. Linux allows for open source application development, sharing of all open source content freely without copyright infringement laws, etc. Windows XP allows for a fast system with minimal functionality.
